Life as We Know It
I always assumed and dreamed that the first movie I’d write (if I were ever able to finish a screenplay) would be about teenagers. It’s part of the reason that I chose to do my final university paper on teen flicks. Up until this point in my life, the stories that have touched my heart the most have been coming of age stories.
I just watched a very short-lived drama about teens called “Life as We Know It.” I was studying abroad in London and missed the entire single season run of the show, and so I lived unaware of its existence until stumbling upon the series in Netflix. (I was filling up my queue with Freaks & Geeks, of course.)
And so, after watching it, my realization now is that:
1.) I am now too grown up to understand what it’s like to be a teenager.
2.) I have come of age. In a way that I didn’t when I turned 18 or went off to school or graduated or even when I got married. I’m not sure when it happened, but I’m Molly Ringwald and standing in front of a mirror and realizing that bam it happened.
And bam I’ve become someone who gets Yankee Candle catalogs in the mail.
That said, I’m still hoping that the reason I didn’t love the show was because the show wasn’t that great, and not because I’m too old. I’ll know for sure when I rewatch Freaks and Geeks next week, because I remember being 16 and just loving it. Cross your wrinkled fingers.
